Parent Message – November 16, 2020

COVID Update
There has been an increase in COVID-19 cases in the province and in the West Central area. We will continue to follow our return to school protocols to minimize the risk of transmission.  Here are some of the highlights of our safe school plan.
  • Students and staff in Grades 5-12 are required to wear masks in the hallways and when they cannot socially distance. Appropriate social distancing is two meters.
  • Floor stickers and signs are posted to indicate proper social distancing.
  • All students and staff must sanitize their hands when entering and exiting classrooms. Hand sanitizer is available in all rooms in the school and at the front entrance.
  • Only two students are permitted in the bathrooms at a time.
  • Only four students are allowed in the changerooms at a time.
  • All students and staff are required to do daily health assessments and any who show any of the symptoms outlined on our Attendance at School informational sheet are asked to stay home.
  • Students and staff who show signs of illness while at school will be sent home.
  • Increased cleaning of high-touch surfaces takes place throughout the day.
  • Visitors continue to be limited. Guests with permission to be in the school must follow our safety protocols including wearing a mask and hand sanitizing.
  • Parents' access is limited. Parents are asked to drop off and pick up students outside the school.
Thank you for your help in ensuring that our safety plan is followed.

Absences - In order to ensure that students are able to achieve their learning outcomes by the end of the school year, DCS students are still able to access their lessons online. Teachers have reached out to parents earlier this year with information on how to access lessons online and stay on track with their learning. Please reach out to your child’s teachers if you have any questions.

Quarter 2 Starts Wednesday, November 18 - This school year, DCS switched to a quarter system that impacts the Grades 9-12. Final assessments and exams are taking place today and tomorrow in some high school subjects. New timetables will be distributed on Wednesday with the change to Quarter 2.

Report Cards – November 20 - Traditionally, we send report cards home earlier in November but with our switch to the quarter system, we are sending report cards home this Friday. Report cards will be sent to the Parent Portal on Friday. Print report cards will be sent home on Monday. Later today, you will receive an email with information on accessing marks through the portal. Click on this link for further instructions

Student Conferences/Interviews - K-8 interviews will be held next week on November 25-26 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. We look forward to communicating with you about your child’s progress. Please contact the school to book a phone or online interview (using Teams) via email at megan.keeler@sunwestsd.ca or by phone at 306-846-2188.

SCC News - Congratulations to our SCC Pumpkin Carvers: the Tully Family (Sierra and Wyatt) and Claire Braniff. Winners were selected randomly from all submissions and were given $25 gift card to the Dinsmore Hotel.

Online Book Fair - A reminder that our library fund-raiser is underway. This year we are hosting our Scholastic Book Fair online which means you can shop from the comfort of your home. Books are delivered to you rather than at the school so friends and families outside of our community may also purchase books. Information for ordering online is on our school website at http://www.dinsmorecomposite.sunwestsd.ca/. Thank you for your support!

Remembrance Day Program - Thanks to Mrs. Jones for once again putting together a memorable "virtual" Remembrance Day program with the help of high school students Ryan Kako, Tristen Flath, Spencer Flath, Madyson Dempsey, and Paige Thomson. Four students also recorded their choral performance of “Eli, Eli” by Abigail Friesen, Pia Sol, Amiyah Jones, and Levi Lawes with accompaniment by Mrs. McIntyre.
The Macrorie Legion Branch 239 sponsored a Provincial Banner to recognize winners in the 2019 Legion Poster and Literary Content. Congratulations to Harlie McNeely, Abigail Friesen, and Madyson Dempsey whose provincial entries will be commemorated on the banner which will be hung in the gym.

Level 4 Plan – In the Case of a Closure - All schools in Sun West were required to create a plan just in case we have a breakout of COVID-19 in our school/community and are required to transition to at-home learning. This is a precautionary plan but it does provide some key points:
  • Student learning will not be optional;
  • Attendance of students will continue to take plan including participation in online class meet-ups;
  • Students will have teacher contact each day;
  • All provincial outcomes will continue to take place;
  • Families will be provided with appropriate technology and supports to continue learning at home.
More information about our Level 4 plan is available by clicking on this link.
